Rushden & Diamonds rocked Leeds with a deserved 11-minute goal but the Premiership side hit back to win quite comfortably in the end. Teenage striker Alan Smith, making only his third first-team start, was the star of the show with two coolly taken goals. Carl Heggs put Rushden in front and should have put them level in the 66th minute but skied a straightforward chance wide of the post. Leeds immediately broke to the other end and Jimmy Hasselbaink, who had been shooting from long range all night, finally got on the score sheet from eight yards
