Hassan Kachloul ensured three precious points for Saints in their battle against relegation. His fifth goal of the season had an element of luck, deflected in by defender Rio Ferdinand. West Ham had numerous chances, with Matt Le Tissier clearing off the line from Marc-Vivien Foe and late in the match, Scott Hiley also clearing off the line in spectacular fashion, from Trevor Sinclair. Mark Hughes in still looking for his first Southampton goal but was twice denied by superb saves from Shaka Hislop
