Aston Villa put a run of four successive defeats behind them on a bumpy Selhurst Park pitch. For much of the first-half they were superior but toward the end skipper Gareth Southgate had to rally his defenders to combat a surging Wimbledon. In the second-half Michael Oakes in the Villa goal kicked away in front of the on-rushing Efan Ekoku. In a thrilling finale Alan Wright scrambled the ball out of Villa's crowded goalmouth after a free-kick from Chris Perry
