I have recently been contacted by Ingemar Ekman with the following message:
"I was last week to Åland Island´s Emigrant institute and they have looked into your query and has found an John Mann born about 1857 in Finland, died 1937 in Kenai Penisula. Alaska. A son Harry Mann was married to Osholkow family with connection to Knagg family. An Eugenia Myshiakow b 22 Dec 1884, dtr to Stepan Myshiakow and Matron Tychinitna, in Kenai. Do you think this is your family?" Yes, this is the family, and I'm looking for a birth place in Finland for John Mann b. ca 1857. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm hoping to find any siblings of my paternal grandfather Karl Edvin Karlsson Idman born in Brando, Asterholma Sept 26, 1869 to Karl Gustav Andersson Idman and Matilda Lovisa Thomedotter. I believe they lived in Houtskar for most of his young life. Young Karl settled in Jersey City, New Jersey around 1896 and married Ida Sofia Ronnlund where they raised six children. In ellisisland.com I found a sister named "Anna Idman" who at the age of 26 must have traveled from Aland for a visit in June of 1900 but don't know anything else or whether or not he had other siblings. Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated.
Good luck to us all!

My Grandmother was born and raised on Aland Island. Her name was Elna Mattsson. She has a brother, Ernest and two sisters that I know of. Their names were Hilda and Irene. Elna was probably born around 1892. She came to America and met and married Walfrid Gustaf Andersson. They ended up in Cleveland, Ohio. They had one son in 1922. His name was Gustave Edward Anderson. If you have any knowledge of the Mattsson family I would be forever gratefull.

I have some family information from my Lindstrom roots. My grandfather was born on the farm "Olas Norrgard on Sottunga February 25, 1867. In 1882 when he was 15 he sailed from Mariehamn, Aland for the first time and then sailed every year until October 23, 1888 when he sailed to New York. The men were being inducted into the Russian army and they did not want to serve. My Grandfather was Erick Edwin Lindstrom and they eventually settled in Chinook, Washington, USA and my father was the youngest of 12 children. I wrote a paper in 1977 based on information from my uncle Anton Lindstrom who had visited Aland Islands. In my paper I have some pictures and the paper is 6 pages long.
I would like to correspond with someone who lives in the Aland Islands or who knows about this farm in Norrgard on Sottunga Island.

Any info./assistance most gratefully appreciated-- thank you!

New information: Hilding Karlstrom, born 10/10/1930, twin to John Torvald Karstrom born Bronx, NY to Edith Sofia Blomqvist..somehow ends up in orphan home in Aland sometime after birth, to age 9,remembers grandmother Edla Blomqvist. Leaves Gothenburg, on October 5, 1939 arrives NY Oct 14, 1939 via S.S. Kungsholm, per the ship register. He has few recollections of life before age 9, and wants very much to learn about twin brother, John, and fill in the blanks of his early years. If anyone has knowledge, please contact me. Thank you so very much. See you in September 2007!
Hej! I need to ask for help again, before my return this Sept...Anton, born 7.11.1909 Kokar, Karlby, emigrated to USA in 1929. Need information as to who he married, and if he had a family. He was involved with Edith Sofia Blomqvist (born US) in 1929, daughter of Edla Sofia Lindroos and Severus Edvin Blomqvist and fathered a set of twins, born 10/10/1930 Hilding Karlstrom and John Torvald Karlstrom, looking for information on John's life, and to reunite him with his brother. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Elin Soderstrom came to the United States in 1921. Her entire family knows nothing about her past, her father was Otto Soderstrom from Hammarland, Norby, Aland. Elin's birth date was Sept 12th either 1903 or 1904. Any information would be greatly appreciated since Elin left no information to her daughter. Would very much like to visit Aland with the knowledge of her roots.
I'd like to try and locate Oscar Eklund or Oscar Anderson, as the Anderson family changed their name to Eklund at one point. I understand there is a history in Aland, and Oscar would have emigrated to US in early 1900's. I plan on visiting the island in March of 2008, so any information prior to then would be most helpful. Thanks.
Hello again; Aland has been so kind, and has located all of my families roots, except for one, A BIG ONE! Does any one know anything about Anders Nyberg, born 1796 in Lapptrask, Finland, and died 1854 in Skarpans, Sund. He had moved from Lapptrask Finland, from Helsinki in 1843, to Sund. Does some one know the Lapptrask genealogy site E-mail address? Anders Nyberg,(my G-G-Grandfather)had to leave a trail to Alands, he was given birth, he had to have a Father and a Mother and Grand parints, maybe some Sisters and/or Brothers. Am I an ancestor of Swedish-Vikings? Did my ancient ancestors come from the city of Troy? Anders Nyberg has over three hundred of his decendents here in U.S.A., and we are all proud to have decended from the Swedish people, VERY PROUD, Thank You...
I am writing for my husband, Berndt H. Erikson, Jr., son of Berndt H. Erikson, Sr. He is interested in the Eriksson family from Saltvik, Aland Islands. His grandfather, Berndt Mikael Eriksson was born in Saltvik May 13, 1893 and arrived in Boston on the "Lynton" June 21, 1915. Berndt Mikael's father was Erik H. (Harold) Eriksson, a shipbuilder, married to Alma. He had a sister Sigrid and two brothers, Rueben and Leonard. Berndt Mikael Eriksson married Edla Maria Gabriellson Sidbaik of Portom, Finland. Edla's father was Gabriel Sidbaik, a farmer, and her mother was Annalisa Risbarg Sidbaik. Any information would be wonderful!
Hello:
I am looking for lost family. Anders Nyberg, Great-Great-Grandfather, born 1796, died 1854,in Lapptrask, Finland. He had married Anna Stina Eriksdotter, born 1808 in Saltvik. Great-Grandfather Carl August Nyberg had two sisters, Anna Josefina, born 1839, and Amanda Matilda, born 1848. This is the Nyberg clan in the U.S.A..
My mother(M.)and I have received wonderful help due to the Aland Islands' Emigrant Institute -- Many thanks and information (if allowed) will be forthcoming, along with up-dated information on all of these Aland Islands' family members dating back to 1815 or more. (See message below from "Punky".) We are appreciative beyond words. Again, many thanks to everyone! T. Walker
Greetings to Aland Geneology Seekers!
May the following help others or provide us with your assistance. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
A certified U.S.A. marriage licence I have gives this information which is also supported by other documents. Hilda M. Johnson (b. 1887 d. 1934) notes Otto Johnson (b. 1872 d. 1950) was born in Sweden, and that Hilda Marie Johannson (Johnson) was born in Finland. They each list their last names as "Johnson" -- it is believed they were not related, only that Johnson was a common Scandanavian name. Also Otto listed his mother as Catrina Olson Johnson and his father as Oscar Johnson We do not know anything about Otto's father Oscar or whether or not he even came to the United States. Otto's mother, Catrina (Catherine) Olson Johnson (b. 1832 -- d. 1922 is burried in Greenwood Cemetary, Petoskey, Michigan, U.S.A. in the same plot as Otto and Hilda. Otto's sister Dessie married John August Nyman. John was born in Sweden. He was a high ranking officer of Penn Dixie Company (where Bay Harbor is now). Dessie Johnson, (b. 1864 -- d. 1943) Dessie and John had 2 sons, John Arthur Nyman (b. 1887 -- d. 1971) He known as Arthur J. ie "Nyman The Coal Man") and Emery Oscar Nyman (b. 1892)(3 x City Mayor.)
A friend of Hilda's, Amelia (Emilia) Johnson, also came from the Aland Islands and was a good friend of Hilda Johannson's mother Christina (Mina?). Amelia Johnson (later, Gustafason) came across the Atlantic Ocean on the same ship as Hilda M. Johannson. (Johnson) A friend of theirs known by the name "Astrid" may have been with them.
We also have a number of photo's of Hilda (1904? with her brother and Emelia (Amelia) and friends at Atlantic City and on the oceanside boardwalk. There is also a photo in the newsletter that is believed to be Arthur. There are a few that may be of Christina. Prior to about 1909, many of the postcards are from Aland Islands to Hilda at the Philadelphia address. One postcard from Aland is appears to be a family photogragh young people.
Hilda's said that the reason Hilda came to the United States, was to look for her father "Eric" who was said to have come to the United States -- thathe was "lost in the war". When Eric was never found, Hilda's mother Christina Johnson remarried, presumably in the Aland Islands, to a man with the last name "Fingeroz". This is most likely an event that happened between 1910 and 1920. The post cards to Hilda from Christina when translated, could very well pin point the date.
Thanks again for taking the time to read my information.
Chistina
This message is in response to the message that was posted regarding the meaning of "stone cutter" -- I have a postcard that was addressed to my great-grandfather as To: "Stone Crusher" . I always assumed he took lime stone that surrounded the Penn Dixie Cement Plant, and crushed it with a hand pick to be transported to be ground into powdered cement, which was then put into cloth bags my grandmother and other women sewed on sewing machines. More information about the Portland Cement Company in the early 1900's, along with photos are at the Museum in Petoskey, Michigan and Bay Harbour. Candice is the director.
Hello! I am looking for the family of Hilda Marie Johnson Johannson (or some variation of this name). Her father's name (I think) was Eric. I have extensive information about her and postcards from her family in Marieham from about 1900 to 1930, however I cannot read them as they are written in the Swedish language. Hilda married Otto Johnson around 1909 in the U.S.A. and died in the 1930's. I would appreciate hearing from possible family members in the Aland Islands. Thank you!

Hello Eva,
It has been a long time since we have seen one another. Hope all is well with you. Melissa, my daughter, and myself want to purchase one of Hjordis' books (English version). How would we pay for them? Will you take a personal check? I know Ingemar will never take a check, he says there is banking differences in our countries that make it difficult to cash a check...and I don't want to make it difficult. Please get back to me...I hope to see you again next year 2007.
Sincerely,
Marlene Jenson (Ingemar Ekman's cousin)

Sidan heter. www.ellisisland.se

My friend Jean Heuman came to assist me with some family followups. We were in Switchboard-Google and had put in Names of Brothers Karl Oscar Hellberg and Erik Emanuel Hellberg. Jean had also put in my name Up came Ålands Immigrant Inst and my name was on the register. There was also an Obituary for another Arnold Carlson in Cape Cod, Mass. I had known this Arnold Carlson. He was married to Barbara Anderson. Barbara's mother and my mother Tekla Sandberg, as young immigrants, had worked together for a wealthy family, Hollingsworth in Braintree, Mass. Our families had remained friends. On my father's 75th birthday, Barbara Anderson Carlson came to our home in Medford, Mass. with her father Bengt Anderson. Also there was my wifes Grandfather, Birger Nelson. Barbara's father Bengt Anderson and Birger Nelson had worked together many years before and met again at this party for my father. Both were so happy to meet again.
Interesting genealogy with Scandanavian families.

My visit this past summer was one of beauty. My daughter Alisa accompnied me and we visited the Immigrant Soc office. Met Eve and Hjordis one day. Attended the Annual meeting of the Society were my cousins were present and most pleased to meet Ingemar Ekman.
April 13, 2006. My family and I recall our delightful visit to Åland in the summer of 1996, with Hjordis Sundblom as our guide. I truly loved reading our relative Hjordis' memoir, would love to tell her, but don't have her address. Please pass this note along to her, if possible.
The sad news on our side of the Atlantic is that Ralph Erickson died March 24, 2006. He was 91 years old, extremely frail at the end, but still very much Ralph. A concert will be held in his memory at the end of May.
My warm best wishes to all my Åland relatives.

Hej Eva,
Thanks for your letter and the Newspaper about my cousin Telka Osterland with the Finnish President.
You mentioned the new office in the grounds of the Eriksson home. I have read several books about the Eriksson ships and the grain races. I remember one that said that Eriksson operated all his business from a cottage on his property.
Good luck on your new Home!
Arnold

Hej!,It has been a little over a year now since I first visited this site, and 3 months since I had the chance to visit and meet with all of you! I had a wonderful time on the Aland islands of Foglo and Kokar,my heritage has taken on new meaning! I look forward to visiting with all of you again, hopefully this summer. Thank you so much, Eva, Hjordis, and Ingemar! The three of you made my dream come true! God Jul!.
We received word today from Ingemar Ekman that Hjordis' book is now translated into English. We would be very interested in securing a copy. Please send information as to its availability in America. We live in Austin, Texas and visited Aland in August 2003 and while visiting Hjordis in Mariehamn, we also visited Eva Meyer at the Emigrant Institute. We understand that the book will be published by Christmas. We look forward to hearing from you and ask that you greet Hjordis from us.
As you noticed on the previous page, I wrote requesting information on my mother. Unfortunately, I had a few things wrong and my sister corrected me. My mother's name was Astrid Waldina Gustafson and she was born in Marieham, Aland. Her father, August, was a sea captain. Her mother, Marie Johannson remarried but I don't know her married name. My mother's brother passed away a year ago. He owned an island in the Gulf of Bothnia (not the Sea). If this helps anyone to provide me with information, I would be very grateful.
My mother was born Astrid Waldini Gustafson in Westinbrod (I don't know how to spell it)Aland. Her father was a sea captain who died at a young age. Her Mother, Maria, remarried but don't know what his name was. My mother had a brother named Verner who was a restauranteer in Aland and owned an island in the Sea of Bothnia. He passed away a year ago or so. She had another brother named Wallace who lived in Minnesota in the USA. He passed away many years ago. I would love to get in touch with anyone who remembers or knew someone who remembers my mom. She was born February 19, 1909 and passed was in 1997.
My great grandfather was Erik Gustaf Karlstrom, born Karlby Kokar 1/5/1871 left for America in 1893. His second wife was Ania Emilia Lajberg from village of Hasterboda, who came to America 17 August 1899. Searching family history and for relatives!
Hi I am looking for my relative Gote Sundberg My grandmas name was Nina Bergman I think her mother was British and father was from Aland? I have a book about the family but would be interested in more information as I have just had a child and would love to inform him about his relatives when he is bigger and we would like to visit our ancestral home.
My ggf and his son (my gf) were from Aland Islands.
I have seen all kinds of photos of the islands, it is breath taking. I am so proud of our heratige.

I am looking for decendants of Johan Ekholm and Augusta Emilia Erikkson married 30 December 1869 at Presto on the Aland Islands. I am the grand daughter of their son Johannes Seth born 24.4.1873.
Children were
1. Augusta Alexahdra born 12.1.1870 2. Johanna Maria b. 26.4.1871 died aged 1 day 3. Johannes Seth b 24.6. 1873 died Hunters Hills, Sydney, Australia 4.8.1933
4. Anna Gustava b.17/12/1975 died aged 2 weeks 5. Johannes Fabien b. 20.1.877 died by drowning in shipwreck Emelies 1894 6.Olga Gustafva b. 18.10.1880 7.Aina Emilia b. 23.4.1883 All these children were born on the Aland Islands either at Presto or Finby. Johan was a Jeweller and Augusta Emilia was a stonecutters daugther. What is a stone cutter - a labourer who works on the roads or one who polishes uncut gem stones?
My great grandmother Augusta Emilia died 10.6.1885. Apparently she was only 33 years of age.
Did Johan remarry? When did he die? Did he have any children by a 2nd marriage? It appears that our grandfather talked about Olaf(spelling) quite frequently. My cousins and I have always thought that he was a brother. Was he a brother or Uncle?
If you have any information regarding any of the above members of this family I would be most grateful to hear from you.
My grandfather died before any of his children were married so his grandchildren only have heresay information from our parents.
Hopeing I may here from one of our distant cousins.
Judith
Hello, greetings from the USA, looking for family roots from Finland 3 yrs and just found out that my grandfather very likely came from here! My only problem now is that I can't read Finnish, but I suspect I'll find my way around. If I am correct, you can now add a Congressional Medal of Honor recipent to your list of emigrates.
Snygg hemsida med fotogalleri och allt! Snyggt jobbat Göran!!
