Harold Meklin and Alda Meklin were born to Hilma Helena Meklin in the early 1900's. She married Arvid Nurmi and became Hilma Nurmi. She had 2 more children. We are trying to locate the name of Harold and Alda's father.
Thank you, Diane
My grandfather, Carl A. Berg emigrated from Aaland to NY in early 1900's. He passed in 1913, at age 31. I knew his uncle, Gustie Sundvik, also from Aaland, in NJ when I was a child. Gustie had been in the Spanish-American war. I am looking for possible relatives or family history.
Juhani Pekanpoika Turtiainen arrived at Mariehamn May 26 1909 from Sordavala and changed his name Turtiainen to Valpas.

I have family that was born and that have lived on the islands for decades
if not longer... One of aunts commented on the Mongolian traits in my
face. I have lost contact with those in my family that could explain how we
have Mongolian in our bloodline. Is there any records of Mongolian
emigrants coming to the Aland islands. My families name is Mattson.
Thank you and I hope you can help.
Hi Jon, Copy of my message in the Finlander forum as reply on your question also there 29 Dec 2009: I was yesterday to the Provincial Archives of Åland and followed Erika Wilhelmina backwards from Ytternäs Jomala and to her birth in Sund parish. Because her parents came from "foreign parishes" and where not written in Sund, she was recorded in an additional book of birth records called "Födda och Döpta i Sund men tillhörande främmande församlingar"- (Thank you Marlene at the archive that you find the book)
Erika Wilhelmina born 18 Jun 1873, baptized 21 Jun 1873, Parents were Gabriel Gabrielsson Rönnholm from Pörtom and his wife Beata Sofia Hemming. Sponsors were Dan. Ljunggren and his wife Anna-Lisa, Crofter´s son Matts Engelbrekt Nylund and his wife Maria Charlotta, All from Högbolstad Sund, baptized by the vicar L.G.V. Törnvall. Please find enclosed a copy from the book. I noticed in the same birth records that the parents got at least also these children: Hanna Karolina b. 4 Oct 1874, Anna Eufemia b 9 Dec 1876, the twins Gustaf Emil and Emanuel Bernhard b 10 feb 1879, the twins were "emergency" (nöddöpta) baptized and both died within a week, Axel Emanuel Knut b 13 Feb 1880, I had no time to follow all the pages and the parents may have had more children. It wa also stated that Gabriel Rönnholm was a sailor from Pörtom and Beata Sofia Hemming was born in March 1844 in Solf and she was remarried as widow 27 Dec 1891 with Gustaf Adolf Rosenqvist b 1842 in Kimito . Note : the sponsor Daniel Ljunggren was my greatgrandfather´s 2nd cousin. In the same records of births in Sund from parents not written in Sund I found also another Rönnholm: Johan Hjalmar Mauritz b 31 May 1888 to Wendla Sofia Rönnholm from Pörtom. Regarding Erika Wilhelmina Rönnholms movements in Åland: She moved 1892 from Sund to Lemland and was a house maid in Västeränga village and 1899 to Jomala Ytternäs and was found on the page "Grosshandlare Nordenssons ångsåg" Best regards,
Ingemar
Hello
These are my great grandparents and grandmother, Wanda, who emigrated to America in 1907 with two of her sisters, one of whom was called Irene. They all lived in Aland. Wanda told me she was born there, but I don't know where. The only information I have regarding birth of Wanda is from the Ellis Island records which say she was born in Hollis Finland. I cannot find any record of such a place. Any helpful information from anyone would be appreciated.

Hi Pirkko, Håkan Skogsjö´s books about Lemland recording your grandmother Jenny Maria Karlsson born 20 Jan 1902 in Flaka, her parents and her mother´s ancestors in several generations. Jenny Maria moved to Turku 1931 with 3 of her children and returned 1948 and moved back to Turku 1955. Jenny Maria´s brother emigrated to Canada 1924. Same book has also an August Wilhelm Karlsson born 1859 in Houtskär, died 1916 in Flaka and also an Edvin Artur Mikael Karlsson b 1878 in Jomala, died 1924 in Lumparland. I do not find any connection between August Wilhelm or Edvin Artur Mikael and Jenny Maria. Descendants to Jenny Maria´s mother Maria Lovisa Blomqvist half brothers and half sisters may still living in Åland and Sweden. Best regards Ingemar Ekman, Järfälla, Sweden
Happy New Year to all. Iam looking for Karlssons , Hamnstrom, Hogman who could be related to Karl and Emma Lindeman in NewJersey.

Signe Movall b 1915 d 1967 was married to my 4th cousin Algot Mattsson b 1910 d 1994, they had no children. The book in Swedish about families in Lemland by Håkan Skogsjö has information about Fredrik Movall´s parents and siblings including also new living descendants in Åland. The parents were sea captain Vilhelm Movall b 1876 in Sund d 1937 in Flaka, and Alexandra Mattsson b 1873 in Flaka, d 1944 in Flaka. Extract from the book about their children: Fredrik b 1907 emigrated 1928 to Australia, Astrid b 1909 d 1910, Sanni b 1910 d 1967 unmarried, Signe mentioned above, Sven b 1916 d 1974. Descendants to Sven are living in Åland and I will send direct information to you about them and I hope you will get more information about your family in Åland. Welcome to Åland. Happy New year. Ingemar EKman, Järfälla Sweden
My great-grandfather was Fredrik Movall, who was born in Flaka, Lemland in May 1907.
We aren't 100% on when he actually came to Australia, but it would've been sometime in the 1920's, as my grandmother was born in 1936 and was the youngest of his 3 children.
He had 2 sisters, Sanny and Signe and a brother Sven - Sanny emigrated to Sweden but the family don't know what happened to Signe or Sven or any of their descendants (if they had any).
My mother and I are travelling to Mariehamn in July this year and are hoping to go to Lemland to see where the family came from and possibly find some family, if any are still there.
If anyone has any info about Fredrik, Sanny, Signe, Sven, their parents or Sanny, Signe & Sven's children/descendants please feel free to email me.
Thanks !
Tack
I wish all Ålanders a happy, healthy and pleasant new year.
Thank you Ben-Eric and Erik for helping me finding my ancestors in Åland!
Greetings,

Ursäkta,
det blev lite fel på mailadressen.
Hej,

I have found in my research through my family history that my great great grandfather was born, as the obit say on Aland Island. Other than his name, Ernest C W Carlson and his father, Carl Augustus Carlson, I don't know anything. I was wondering if you could send me in a new directions with some suggestions of places to search. The years I know are: He immigrated to US about 1887, returned for a visit in 1924. Thanks for anything, and even for just reading this. Thanks!!
Ich finde den Aufbau der Seite sehr gut. Macht weiter so. http://www.fsfservice.com
I am looking for more information about my grandfather. Charlies Levi Sundblom. I have had a lot of help from Tomas Sundblom. I was just wondering if some one in Aland new more??/ Thank you Ben
I appreciate that you took the time to help me with the translation. It does help me in my research. Thanks again,
Connie
Former nurse at Åland's General hospital, widow. Sorry it does not say anything about cause of death. At least not this sentence.
Could someone please translate to English, "F.d. sjukskotersk vid Allm. sjukhuset pa Aland, Enkefru" I have a Swedish to English dictionary but can't find a translation that makes sense. The phrase is supposedly a cause of death. Thanks so much, Connie
Sorry again for not replacing the @...
My paternal grandmother had a maternal aunt Fanny Charlotta whose married name was Enström. According to my grandmother she married an Albert Enström. Fanny also had two children a daughter born in 1910 called Dora Valdine (same surname as her mother). Three years later Nils Evert Enström was born in 1913. He was a son to Albert Enström, who later re-married a lady named Irene something. Since no one knew who was Eva's father when her mother died in 1916 she was sent back to Åland while her brother was raised by his father. I know wonder if anyone knows who fathered Nils Evert born in 1913. No one on my side of the family knows anything about his supposed father.

the information about Victor Emanuel was wrong the date of bith correct but his parents wrong. His father was Johan Victor Gustfasson ( he was a son to Hans Jacobsson)not Victor Emanuel. But Johan Victoer was married to this lady Amanda Charlotta Lindeman. And yes , Victor Emanuel was born in 1886 but not in Sund in Björby, and he did emigrate to America in 1906. That's all I know. And he's proving impossible for me to find.
Sorry for confusing and incorrect info, any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
Oops, forgot to replace the @ at first so I'm trying again if by chance the first one will be deleted... Victor Emanuel was born in 1886 in Sund to Hans Jacobsson and Eva Charlotta Lindeman. I know for a fact that he emigrated to the States in 1906 but never once returned back to his parents back at Åland. He also settled down, married and had a lot of children. But why can't I find him in the archives? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Thanks for all your help I have also been able to find a lot of information myself. But only recently. I'm now trying to find a brother of her's named Victor Emanuel Gustafsson born 1886 in Sund emigrated in 1906 to Amerika. I have been unable to find him in the Åland archives so far. I have been told he married and had a lot of children over there and he never returned back to Åland. Unfortunatly I do not know where he settled or the name of his wife.
Edit Kristina's father, Johan Viktor Gustavsson (1860-1935) was sailor living in Bjorby, Sund parish married to Amanda Charlotta Lindeman, b. 1858 in Gesterby, Sund Parish. There are further ancestors back to at least 18th century in the Skogsjo book (2003) about families and farms in Sund.
Looking for ancestors to my grandmother's mother Edit Kristina Gustafsson born July 24 of 1894 in Sund, Åland, both on her father's and mother's side if possible. First of all I'm interested in finding information about her parents and siblings. I know that her father was a sailor(seaman). But any information would be welcomed.
I am searching for Oskar Frithiof Wenstrom who emmigrated to the US in 1895. He may have had a brother Johan Petrus who came to the US in 1905.
I am looking for information about my husbands grandma and her daugter. Edla Viktoria Mattsson born 1875 in Jomala and her daugter Edla Sofia born 1895. They emigrated to USA 1907 via Liverpool, England. Any information would be greatly appriciated. Hälsningar Margaretha

My mother Rosemary (Anderson) Hill met Hjordis again while visiting Aland with my father, Mom's sister Mary-Lou (Anderson) Fricke and her husband a number of years ago. I say "again" because as I understand it, Hjordis had visited Mom's family in Chicago when Mom and Mary-Lou were little girls. Mom has corresponded with Hjordis for several years, but in my parents' recent move from Houston, TX to Rochester, MN, the file with Hjordis' address has been lost. We may yet find it in a box somewhere, but that will take months, and I would love to get Hjordis' address for Mom sooner. Could you possibly pass this request on to Hjordis and, with her permission, send her personal postal addres to me at this e-mail address. I would be so very grateful, and Mom would be absolutely thrilled! Thank you for your help!
My Mothers father came from the Aland Island in the early 1900's.
I would like to purchase a Aland Island flag to fly in his memory.
Can you direct me to some one that would have that information so I can purchase the flag. Thank you very much,
John

My grandfather, Karl Elis Hoglund, (please see earlier note) seems to have emigrated in 1907 not 1912 (as per documents I have recently aquired). I'm still looking for relatives of folks who knew his brother who passed away in the 90's. I'm also looking for fellow family members of other Aland emigrants especially in the New York area (I am on Long Island). My great grandmother was Erika Willhemina Rönnholm. She emigrated to America in 1899 from Jomala. She lived with many other Alanders, mainly from Sund and Saltvik, in Georgetown, Connecticut, USA. I never knew her and my mother does not have much information on her time spent in Aland or of her family. I would appreciate any information anyone has.
Thanks
I am looking for the ancestors of my great-grand mother, Amelia (Amalia) Haggblom. She was born about 1857. The 1920 US census says that she immigrated as a widow to the USA in 1910. She came here to be with her three children Signe V., Ida S. and Victor WV. I would like to know her date of birth, name of husband and date of marriage. Family tradition says that her husband was a sailor and died off the coast of Florida of a swamp fever. Any further info about her parents would be a bonus. Thanx bunches.
There are several persons in the Föglö Parish in Aland Islands with the name Gustaf Helin. If you know his birthdate it would certanly help.
Anders Gustaf born11/8/1859 Gustaf Andreas Jacob b.1/17/1881 Gustaf Anton b. 3/12/1893 Gustaf Erik b. 1/15/94 Gustaf Ivar b. 8/22/1884 Gustaf Eric b. 5/3/1857 Johan Gustaf b. 3/19/1881
According to my notes unfortunately none of these emigrated to America.
Greetings to our friends, and perhaps family, in the Aland Islands. I am looking for information about my grandfather Johannes Sjöblom. He emigrated to
Pennsylvania, USA in 1909 via Liverpool, England. We believe his full name was
Johannes August Ferdinand Sjöblom as that is written in a family Bible. We also think that he was from Kökar. Any information would be greatly appreciated

Hi Cyndee,
The Swedish book "Families and farms in Saltvik" by Håkan Skogsjö has information about your family. Extract from the book:
Elin Viktorina born 28 Dec 1885 in Bertby, emigrated 1909 to USA.
Her parents Karl Johan Albert Karlsson b 26 Aug 1858 in Smedsböle Sund, died 29 Jun 1930 in USA and Matilda Josefina Nordman b 27 Jun 1859 in Strömma Saltvik, died 20 Nov 1931 in USA. They were married 18 May 1881. Elin (Ella) Viktorina had 5 sisters and 1 halfsister and 2 of them emigrated also to USA: Jenny Wilhelmina b 30 Oct 1887 and Ida Gunborg b 30 Aug 1889 died 27 Jun 1902 in USA (The family emigrated first time to USA 1893, but returned and emigrated again 1909) The book has also information about now living descendants in Åland and I will send you later information about them to your email address.

Hello, I am trying to find out some information on my husbands fathers family. He came from Brando in the Aland Islands. His name is Henrik Eliel Karlsson? Eklund. It could be under either one. My husband is not sure who changed the last name to Eklund, either his father or his Grandfather. Henriks siblings names are: Amanda and John as far as we know. There could be others. Any information would greatly be appreciated. Thankyou, Laura Eklund

Hi Deborah.
I have some information about the Nordman family. Please send your e-mail address.
My grandfather, Gustav Eliel Nordman, emigrated from Saltvik in 1910 at the age of 18. The Ellis Island records show that his next of kin was his mother, Vendla Nordman of Saltvik. He and a friend, Karl F. Karlsson (age 36) emigrated on the same ship to New York and they were apparently headed to stay with another Saltvik emigrant, Julius Erikson of Norwood, Massachussets.
We are intending to come to the Islands for a visit some time next year and if anyone has any information on the Nordmans who might be related who are still in Saltvik I would be very grateful for any information.
My grandfathers father was Emanuel Eriksson. We have been told that he was from Åland and as a sailor. He married a girl from Kronoberg (Flyareboda) and lived for 5 years in Liverpool. When serving on an English boat (Centurion?) he died in 1891 and was buried in the Pacific Ocean. Does anyone know more about his origins in Åland?
My grandfather died in Aland and is buried at the Saltvik church along with my grandmother. We have very little information on my grandfathers name Nurmi but I believe he changed it from Lojander. Would anyone have information on either Nurmi or Lojander. We believe he had a sister somewhere in Finland. Thanks
I have recently been contacted by Ingemar Ekman with the following message:
"I was last week to Åland Island´s Emigrant institute and they have looked into your query and has found an John Mann born about 1857 in Finland, died 1937 in Kenai Penisula. Alaska. A son Harry Mann was married to Osholkow family with connection to Knagg family. An Eugenia Myshiakow b 22 Dec 1884, dtr to Stepan Myshiakow and Matron Tychinitna, in Kenai. Do you think this is your family?" Yes, this is the family, and I'm looking for a birth place in Finland for John Mann b. ca 1857. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm hoping to find any siblings of my paternal grandfather Karl Edvin Karlsson Idman born in Brando, Asterholma Sept 26, 1869 to Karl Gustav Andersson Idman and Matilda Lovisa Thomedotter. I believe they lived in Houtskar for most of his young life. Young Karl settled in Jersey City, New Jersey around 1896 and married Ida Sofia Ronnlund where they raised six children. In ellisisland.com I found a sister named "Anna Idman" who at the age of 26 must have traveled from Aland for a visit in June of 1900 but don't know anything else or whether or not he had other siblings. Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated.
Good luck to us all!

My Grandmother was born and raised on Aland Island. Her name was Elna Mattsson. She has a brother, Ernest and two sisters that I know of. Their names were Hilda and Irene. Elna was probably born around 1892. She came to America and met and married Walfrid Gustaf Andersson. They ended up in Cleveland, Ohio. They had one son in 1922. His name was Gustave Edward Anderson. If you have any knowledge of the Mattsson family I would be forever gratefull.
I have some family information from my Lindstrom roots. My grandfather was born on the farm "Olas Norrgard on Sottunga February 25, 1867. In 1882 when he was 15 he sailed from Mariehamn, Aland for the first time and then sailed every year until October 23, 1888 when he sailed to New York. The men were being inducted into the Russian army and they did not want to serve. My Grandfather was Erick Edwin Lindstrom and they eventually settled in Chinook, Washington, USA and my father was the youngest of 12 children. I wrote a paper in 1977 based on information from my uncle Anton Lindstrom who had visited Aland Islands. In my paper I have some pictures and the paper is 6 pages long.
I would like to correspond with someone who lives in the Aland Islands or who knows about this farm in Norrgard on Sottunga Island.

Leaves Gothenburg, on October 5, 1939 arrives NY Oct 14, 1939 via S.S. Kungsholm, per the ship register. He has few recollections of life before age 9, and wants very much to learn about twin brother, John, and fill in the blanks of his early years. If anyone has knowledge, please contact me. Thank you so very much. See you in September 2007!
Hej! I need to ask for help again, before my return this Sept...Anton, born 7.11.1909 Kokar, Karlby, emigrated to USA in 1929. Need information as to who he married, and if he had a family. He was involved with Edith Sofia Blomqvist (born US) in 1929, daughter of Edla Sofia Lindroos and Severus Edvin Blomqvist and fathered a set of twins, born 10/10/1930 Hilding Karlstrom and John Torvald Karlstrom, looking for information on John's life, and to reunite him with his brother. Elin Soderstrom came to the United States in 1921. Her entire family knows nothing about her past, her father was Otto Soderstrom from Hammarland, Norby, Aland. Elin's birth date was Sept 12th either 1903 or 1904. Any information would be greatly appreciated since Elin left no information to her daughter. Would very much like to visit Aland with the knowledge of her roots.
I'd like to try and locate Oscar Eklund or Oscar Anderson, as the Anderson family changed their name to Eklund at one point. I understand there is a history in Aland, and Oscar would have emigrated to US in early 1900's. I plan on visiting the island in March of 2008, so any information prior to then would be most helpful. Thanks.
Hello again; Aland has been so kind, and has located all of my families roots, except for one, A BIG ONE! Does any one know anything about Anders Nyberg, born 1796 in Lapptrask, Finland, and died 1854 in Skarpans, Sund. He had moved from Lapptrask Finland, from Helsinki in 1843, to Sund. Does some one know the Lapptrask genealogy site E-mail address? Anders Nyberg,(my G-G-Grandfather)had to leave a trail to Alands, he was given birth, he had to have a Father and a Mother and Grand parints, maybe some Sisters and/or Brothers. Am I an ancestor of Swedish-Vikings? Did my ancient ancestors come from the city of Troy? Anders Nyberg has over three hundred of his decendents here in U.S.A., and we are all proud to have decended from the Swedish people, VERY PROUD, Thank You...
I am writing for my husband, Berndt H. Erikson, Jr., son of Berndt H. Erikson, Sr. He is interested in the Eriksson family from Saltvik, Aland Islands. His grandfather, Berndt Mikael Eriksson was born in Saltvik May 13, 1893 and arrived in Boston on the "Lynton" June 21, 1915. Berndt Mikael's father was Erik H. (Harold) Eriksson, a shipbuilder, married to Alma. He had a sister Sigrid and two brothers, Rueben and Leonard. Berndt Mikael Eriksson married Edla Maria Gabriellson Sidbaik of Portom, Finland. Edla's father was Gabriel Sidbaik, a farmer, and her mother was Annalisa Risbarg Sidbaik. Any information would be wonderful!
Hello:
I am looking for lost family. Anders Nyberg, Great-Great-Grandfather, born 1796, died 1854,in Lapptrask, Finland. He had married Anna Stina Eriksdotter, born 1808 in Saltvik. Great-Grandfather Carl August Nyberg had two sisters, Anna Josefina, born 1839, and Amanda Matilda, born 1848. This is the Nyberg clan in the U.S.A..
My mother(M.)and I have received wonderful help due to the Aland Islands' Emigrant Institute -- Many thanks and information (if allowed) will be forthcoming, along with up-dated information on all of these Aland Islands' family members dating back to 1815 or more. (See message below from "Punky".) We are appreciative beyond words. Again, many thanks to everyone! T. Walker
Greetings to Aland Geneology Seekers!
May the following help others or provide us with your assistance. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
A certified U.S.A. marriage licence I have gives this information which is also supported by other documents. Hilda M. Johnson (b. 1887 d. 1934) notes Otto Johnson (b. 1872 d. 1950) was born in Sweden, and that Hilda Marie Johannson (Johnson) was born in Finland. They each list their last names as "Johnson" -- it is believed they were not related, only that Johnson was a common Scandanavian name. Also Otto listed his mother as Catrina Olson Johnson and his father as Oscar Johnson We do not know anything about Otto's father Oscar or whether or not he even came to the United States. Otto's mother, Catrina (Catherine) Olson Johnson (b. 1832 -- d. 1922 is burried in Greenwood Cemetary, Petoskey, Michigan, U.S.A. in the same plot as Otto and Hilda. Otto's sister Dessie married John August Nyman. John was born in Sweden. He was a high ranking officer of Penn Dixie Company (where Bay Harbor is now). Dessie Johnson, (b. 1864 -- d. 1943) Dessie and John had 2 sons, John Arthur Nyman (b. 1887 -- d. 1971) He known as Arthur J. ie "Nyman The Coal Man") and Emery Oscar Nyman (b. 1892)(3 x City Mayor.)
A friend of Hilda's, Amelia (Emilia) Johnson, also came from the Aland Islands and was a good friend of Hilda Johannson's mother Christina (Mina?). Amelia Johnson (later, Gustafason) came across the Atlantic Ocean on the same ship as Hilda M. Johannson. (Johnson) A friend of theirs known by the name "Astrid" may have been with them.
We also have a number of photo's of Hilda (1904? with her brother and Emelia (Amelia) and friends at Atlantic City and on the oceanside boardwalk. There is also a photo in the newsletter that is believed to be Arthur. There are a few that may be of Christina. Prior to about 1909, many of the postcards are from Aland Islands to Hilda at the Philadelphia address. One postcard from Aland is appears to be a family photogragh young people.
Hilda's said that the reason Hilda came to the United States, was to look for her father "Eric" who was said to have come to the United States -- thathe was "lost in the war". When Eric was never found, Hilda's mother Christina Johnson remarried, presumably in the Aland Islands, to a man with the last name "Fingeroz". This is most likely an event that happened between 1910 and 1920. The post cards to Hilda from Christina when translated, could very well pin point the date.
Thanks again for taking the time to read my information.
Chistina
This message is in response to the message that was posted regarding the meaning of "stone cutter" -- I have a postcard that was addressed to my great-grandfather as To: "Stone Crusher" . I always assumed he took lime stone that surrounded the Penn Dixie Cement Plant, and crushed it with a hand pick to be transported to be ground into powdered cement, which was then put into cloth bags my grandmother and other women sewed on sewing machines. More information about the Portland Cement Company in the early 1900's, along with photos are at the Museum in Petoskey, Michigan and Bay Harbour. Candice is the director.
Hello! I am looking for the family of Hilda Marie Johnson Johannson (or some variation of this name). Her father's name (I think) was Eric. I have extensive information about her and postcards from her family in Marieham from about 1900 to 1930, however I cannot read them as they are written in the Swedish language. Hilda married Otto Johnson around 1909 in the U.S.A. and died in the 1930's. I would appreciate hearing from possible family members in the Aland Islands. Thank you!

Hello Eva,
It has been a long time since we have seen one another. Hope all is well with you. Melissa, my daughter, and myself want to purchase one of Hjordis' books (English version). How would we pay for them? Will you take a personal check? I know Ingemar will never take a check, he says there is banking differences in our countries that make it difficult to cash a check...and I don't want to make it difficult. Please get back to me...I hope to see you again next year 2007.
Sincerely,
Marlene Jenson (Ingemar Ekman's cousin)

Sidan heter. www.ellisisland.se

My friend Jean Heuman came to assist me with some family followups. We were in Switchboard-Google and had put in Names of Brothers Karl Oscar Hellberg and Erik Emanuel Hellberg. Jean had also put in my name Up came Ålands Immigrant Inst and my name was on the register. There was also an Obituary for another Arnold Carlson in Cape Cod, Mass. I had known this Arnold Carlson. He was married to Barbara Anderson. Barbara's mother and my mother Tekla Sandberg, as young immigrants, had worked together for a wealthy family, Hollingsworth in Braintree, Mass. Our families had remained friends. On my father's 75th birthday, Barbara Anderson Carlson came to our home in Medford, Mass. with her father Bengt Anderson. Also there was my wifes Grandfather, Birger Nelson. Barbara's father Bengt Anderson and Birger Nelson had worked together many years before and met again at this party for my father. Both were so happy to meet again.
Interesting genealogy with Scandanavian families.

My visit this past summer was one of beauty. My daughter Alisa accompnied me and we visited the Immigrant Soc office. Met Eve and Hjordis one day. Attended the Annual meeting of the Society were my cousins were present and most pleased to meet Ingemar Ekman.
April 13, 2006. My family and I recall our delightful visit to Åland in the summer of 1996, with Hjordis Sundblom as our guide. I truly loved reading our relative Hjordis' memoir, would love to tell her, but don't have her address. Please pass this note along to her, if possible.
The sad news on our side of the Atlantic is that Ralph Erickson died March 24, 2006. He was 91 years old, extremely frail at the end, but still very much Ralph. A concert will be held in his memory at the end of May.
My warm best wishes to all my Åland relatives.

Descendants of my mother's half-sister have come to me for information about their great- grandparents. Can you help me with the following: Amanda Amelia Idman, b.October 27, 1877 Emigrated to America, date? Married in Aland to Albin Sjostrand, b. 18--? One child born there before emigrating (John) or perhaps two.
Ben=Eric Pahlman was very helpful regarding my own search for family roots. I am forever grateful! Amanda's father was my grandfather, Frans Oskar Idman, b.1851
Undrar om ev Carolina Björkström kan komma från Åland. 1889 3/12 födde hon dottern Augusta Viktoria´med fader okänd i södra Dalarna i Sverige.
Hej Eva,
Thanks for your letter and the Newspaper about my cousin Telka Osterland with the Finnish President.
You mentioned the new office in the grounds of the Eriksson home. I have read several books about the Eriksson ships and the grain races. I remember one that said that Eriksson operated all his business from a cottage on his property.
Good luck on your new Home!
Arnold
Hej!,It has been a little over a year now since I first visited this site, and 3 months since I had the chance to visit and meet with all of you! I had a wonderful time on the Aland islands of Foglo and Kokar,my heritage has taken on new meaning! I look forward to visiting with all of you again, hopefully this summer. Thank you so much, Eva, Hjordis, and Ingemar! The three of you made my dream come true! God Jul!.
We received word today from Ingemar Ekman that Hjordis' book is now translated into English. We would be very interested in securing a copy. Please send information as to its availability in America. We live in Austin, Texas and visited Aland in August 2003 and while visiting Hjordis in Mariehamn, we also visited Eva Meyer at the Emigrant Institute. We understand that the book will be published by Christmas. We look forward to hearing from you and ask that you greet Hjordis from us.
As you noticed on the previous page, I wrote requesting information on my mother. Unfortunately, I had a few things wrong and my sister corrected me. My mother's name was Astrid Waldina Gustafson and she was born in Marieham, Aland. Her father, August, was a sea captain. Her mother, Marie Johannson remarried but I don't know her married name. My mother's brother passed away a year ago. He owned an island in the Gulf of Bothnia (not the Sea). If this helps anyone to provide me with information, I would be very grateful.
My mother was born Astrid Waldini Gustafson in Westinbrod (I don't know how to spell it)Aland. Her father was a sea captain who died at a young age. Her Mother, Maria, remarried but don't know what his name was. My mother had a brother named Verner who was a restauranteer in Aland and owned an island in the Sea of Bothnia. He passed away a year ago or so. She had another brother named Wallace who lived in Minnesota in the USA. He passed away many years ago. I would love to get in touch with anyone who remembers or knew someone who remembers my mom. She was born February 19, 1909 and passed was in 1997.
My great grandfather was Erik Gustaf Karlstrom, born Karlby Kokar 1/5/1871 left for America in 1893. His second wife was Ania Emilia Lajberg from village of Hasterboda, who came to America 17 August 1899. Searching family history and for relatives!
Just want to thank you, for showing me around in the emigrant center in Mariehamn, when I was there in July. Was very interesting and fascinating to say the least. You have done a fantastic job so far :) Keep up the good work! Med vänlig hälsning,
Stefan
Hi I am looking for my relative Gote Sundberg My grandmas name was Nina Bergman I think her mother was British and father was from Aland? I have a book about the family but would be interested in more information as I have just had a child and would love to inform him about his relatives when he is bigger and we would like to visit our ancestral home.
My ggf and his son (my gf) were from Aland Islands.

I am looking for decendants of Johan Ekholm and Augusta Emilia Erikkson married 30 December 1869 at Presto on the Aland Islands. I am the grand daughter of their son Johannes Seth born 24.4.1873.
Children were
1. Augusta Alexahdra born 12.1.1870 2. Johanna Maria b. 26.4.1871 died aged 1 day 3. Johannes Seth b 24.6. 1873 died Hunters Hills, Sydney, Australia 4.8.1933
4. Anna Gustava b.17/12/1975 died aged 2 weeks 5. Johannes Fabien b. 20.1.877 died by drowning in shipwreck Emelies 1894 6.Olga Gustafva b. 18.10.1880 7.Aina Emilia b. 23.4.1883 All these children were born on the Aland Islands either at Presto or Finby. Johan was a Jeweller and Augusta Emilia was a stonecutters daugther. What is a stone cutter - a labourer who works on the roads or one who polishes uncut gem stones?
My great grandmother Augusta Emilia died 10.6.1885. Apparently she was only 33 years of age.
Did Johan remarry? When did he die? Did he have any children by a 2nd marriage? It appears that our grandfather talked about Olaf(spelling) quite frequently. My cousins and I have always thought that he was a brother. Was he a brother or Uncle?
If you have any information regarding any of the above members of this family I would be most grateful to hear from you.
My grandfather died before any of his children were married so his grandchildren only have heresay information from our parents.
Hopeing I may here from one of our distant cousins.
Judith
Hello, greetings from the USA, looking for family roots from Finland 3 yrs and just found out that my grandfather very likely came from here! My only problem now is that I can't read Finnish, but I suspect I'll find my way around. If I am correct, you can now add a Congressional Medal of Honor recipent to your list of emigrates.
Snygg hemsida med fotogalleri och allt! Snyggt jobbat Göran!!
