Just started playing Pokémon Pinball? Try these tips to catch
lots of Pokémon and not (quite) go crazy.
Read the manual. In fact, read it once, then play the game for a
while, and then read it again. Believe me, you will understand a
lot more the second time.
To catch 'em all, you have to visit all the towns and play both
fields. You start the game in a random town chosen by the slots.
However, the towns run through the slots in a set order, so you
can time it to get just the town you want. If you miss, save the
game, start over, and select "New Game." Now you can
try again.
You can start the Catch 'em mode with either two or three lights
lit on the right ramp. However, you only get the rarer pokémon
when all three lights are lit. In the blue field, if you hit the
right paddle just as the ball gets to it on a new ball, it will
always go up the right ramp.
Scoring Tips
The slots are the key to this game. They give you Ball Savers,
Catch 'Em and Evolution Modes, Bonus Stages, and (most
importantly), double Pikachus. The Pika-Pikas are always charged
and appear on both exit lanes, so you can never lose that ball in
the lanes.
In the blue field, you can light up a CAVE light whenever you
start a new ball. Just let the ball hit the right flipper (don't
do anything). The ball will bounce up and over the inner lane.
You can use the flippers to move the CAVE lights around. Press
one or the other whenever the ball comes near the lanes to
activate an unlit light.
Whenever the ball comes out of the hole, hold up the right
flipper. The ball will roll up over the CAVE sensor and then back
down over the sensor again. A quick flick of the flipper while
the ball is up there will give you two free CAVE lights.
Pikachu can also help open the CAVE. When Pikachu is charging,
flick the flippers until you get an unlit spot above Pikachu.
When Pikachu blasts the ball, it will light light up another CAVE
light for you.
You can also use the flippers to help you light up all three
lights at the top of the field. This upgrades your ball, giving
you a field multipier of x2, x3, or x5. Once you have a Master
Ball (X5), you get 10 million bonus points for lighting these up
again. I've gotten a 100 million this way on one ball.
Bonus Levels
To get huge point totals (in the billions), you need to play and
conquer the bonus levels in each field. These will net you to 50
to 100 million each, but the big bonus is getting to the Mewtwo
stage (which the manual doesn't tell you about).
DIGLETT STAGE (RED FIELD): You only have one ball, so play
defensively. Try to clear one side at a time and keep the
opposite flipper at all times. Beware the Dugtrio area before it
pops up. The ball can whip right around the curve and drop
between the flippers.
GENGAR STAGE (RED FIELD): After the tough Diglett Stage, this one
is a breeze. You get unlimited balls and there are no penalties.
There is a time limit, but these Ghost Pokémon are pretty easy
to hit. I cleared it the first time through.
MEOWTH STAGE (BLUE FIELD): If the ball lands on top of Meowth,
Meowth will drop multiple coins. Once you have several coins, hit
them all before you hit Meowth again (their value increases).
Don't let the ball drop, though, or you'll be starting from
scratch.
SEEL STAGE (BLUE FIELD): This one is tougher than it looks.
Control the ball, so you can hit each Seel as soon as it appears.
Every Seel you hit without a miss multiples its value. If you hit
four or five Seels in a row, you clear the stage. Again, don't
drop the ball.
MEWTWO STAGE (BOTH FIELDS): I haven't cleared this stage but I
don't really want to, ayway. I'd rather go back in for another
billion points. Basically, you just try to hit Mewtwo. A lot. To
hit Mewtwo more often, let the ball roll past the hinge of the
flipper (slowly) and then pop it up. If it's going too fast, use
the flipper as a ramp and send it to the other side.
