Örjan Sjöström

Ejected from the womb on January 5th, 1965, with the umbilical cord wrapped around my head (which is why I am like I am...)

My musical career started at the tender age of 8 months when I sat on the floor and played on my mothers egg slicer, which made noises when you picked at the "strings". I had time to wear out two egg slicers.

On my fourth birthday I received a harmonica from my godfather. I played it very diligently and the first melody I learned was "Twinkle twinkle little star". Shortly thereafter more advanced works like "The Pippi Longstocking theme" followed.

When I was six I received an accordion from my father. I learned waltzes and some other stuff. When I was in the first grade I had my first public performance at the Christmas party. I performed on the accordion. Some of the teachers wept. Whether it was from pleasure or pain I will probably never know...

A few years later an electrical organ was purchased, a Hammond with two manuals and and bass pedals. I learned a lot of songs on it. I played it at a student concert in the Övernäs school. At the same concert my future wife played the violin, but I wasn't aware of that fact at the time...

In high school, in eighth grade, we formed a band called "FIRE". This was the very first band I was in. We traveled around and played at local dance events, including some closer to mainland Finland. I quit "FIRE" in 1983 and joined "Madox". We played many youth-oriented dance events all over Åland. We also entered a competition in mainland Finland where we ended up second. We played rock covers and had a few original songs as well.

After that one had gotten a taste for heavier music, and when Lasse Mattson asked if I wanted to be a part of "Joe Cool" I jumped at the opportunity. This was in 1984.

After "Joe Cool" I wound up in "Eternity". At first I was the keyboard player, but later wound up being the lead singer. In 1987 we recorded the single "Eternity" in the OAL Studio in Stockholm. Eternity existed until 1989. (The picture to the right was taken just before a gig in the "Badhusparken" in Mariehamn...)

After that I took a break from performing for a few years, but being a musician it's very difficult not to play music. In 1992 I joined the band "Evergreen" where I sing and play the keyboard and bass. Since 1996 I've been a part of the A cappella group "Cockis".

When Ella called me and asked if I wanted to be a part of "Barka Vall" I was thrilled, oiled up the leslie and kickstarted my old WLM organ and here we are...
